What Are Unlocked Cell Phones?

Saturday, February 21st, 2009
Ron Wicker asked:

When someone signs up for a new cell carrier plan, they often get a phone at a free or reduced rate with their contract. The cell phones that come with a carrier contract are almost always locked cell phones. This means that they only work with that specific carrier’s Subscriber Identification Module, or SIM, card, a microchip inserted into the phone to activate service. To put it simply, that person can only use that phone while still subscribed to that carrier’s network and, if they want to change carriers, they have to get a new phone.

An unlocked cell phone will work with any carrier’s SIM card. If an individual changes carriers, they simply have to insert a new SIM card into their unlocked cell phone, and the phone will be able to access that carrier’s network.

Cell phone carriers use locked cell phones to their advantage. By locking the cell phones and offering them as part of their contract, they retain more customers. The customer cannot change carriers without getting a new phone and possibly spending more money. Because certain carriers may have contracts with specific cell phone manufacturers, a customer may not be able to get the phone they want with the plan they have. The carriers argue that locking the phones helps them offer the phones at a discounted rate. Still, these phones leave the customer with few options.

An unlocked phone, on the other hand, can be used for years, even if the customer decides to change carriers. The customer has more options as to the type and style of cell phone they choose because they are not pinned down to the phones offered by their carrier. While the customer will have to buy the unlocked phone outright, perhaps spending more money initially, over time, they actually save more money. Plus, unlocked cell phones are much more convenient.

Unlocked cell phones are offered by third parties and are not connected with the carrier companies. On occasion, a cell carrier will unlock a locked phone after a period of time, but these previously locked phones don’t always work with all SIM cards, even once they’re unlocked. As unlocked cell phones become more popular, the overall price of phones should come down.

The U.S. is far behind the rest of the worl in unlocked cell phone sales. In other countries, the majority of cell phones sold are unlocked. In the United States, the majority are sold with contracts and are locked into a certain carrier. This is slowly changing and within a decade unlocked phones shouls surpass locked phone sales.

da da da asked:

okay here is my situation, i am currently in training to be a 911 dispatcher. So far, it is tough and i am indifferent about how i feel about the job. I make 28,000 a year there and around 6,000 more overtime. But recently i have got an offer to go back to Dell to do small business phone sales. It would be a mon-fri day job and the money wuold be a little better. I worked there before but got laid off, but i liked it a lot. Should i stay at 911 or should i go back to dell?

Also has anyone done either of these jobs before? What did you think?

Contracts and Phone Shops: News and Updates

Monday, February 9th, 2009
David Webster asked:

Do you want some stats on mobile phone sales around the globe? Here are some findings following a 2005 reports from CNET news: when the first three months of 2005 ended, there were more than 180 millions handsets sold globally, a 13% growth as compared to the previous year. Three years later, another report was given updating the first quarter sales of handsets in 2008. From the previously mentioned number, more than 283 million mobile phones were sold around the world. BBC News released a report in January of the same year, and said that 65 million mobile phone users are in the UK. It’s not a wonder how much revenue phone shops in the nation are getting.

There are hundreds of mobile phone dealers in and around the UK. From these establishments, you can already view the latest handsets as well as inquire on the best deals on a mobile phone contract. Also called mobile phone tariffs, these refer to your allotted number of call minutes per month, as well as the allowed number of text messages you can send. Some plans have 200 minutes to as many as 1000 minutes. You can compare your options better if you check online from the websites of the leading mobile service providers. Also, a ballpark estimate of monthly cost for contracts will be from £25 to as much as £80.

To be updated and to have a mobile phone in uk means you need to have the latest models, from manufacturers like Sony Ericsson, LG, and Nokia. By the way, for the past few years now, Nokia has swept the competition and has been number one when it comes to handset sales. Following in the number two and three spot are Motorola and Samsung, who also have bestselling units in the UK.

UK mobile phone subscribers often look for a contract that allows them to do more than just send an SMS message or make a voice call. Today, thanks to the developments in 3G technology and wireless internet, one can now get online through the mobile phone. Email, instant messaging, downloading, live video feeds, as well as news and weather updates can now be obtained with just a few taps on a mobile phone. Try to pick out a contract that provides you with these features, as well as find rates on international calls or text messages.
