An Unlocked Cellular Phone Provides True Freedom Of Choice

Monday, December 14th, 2009
Riley Hendersen asked:

Cellular phones have become one of society’s most ubiquitous accessories. What was once the domain of the wealthy technophile is now found in nearly every pocket or handbag from pre-teens to the elderly. For many, the cellular phone has even replaced the landline phone as their only telephone service. Yet with so many people purchasing cellular phones it is amazing that so few people know what they are really buying.

Although you may have purchased your phone from a service provider, in many ways the phone is not entirely yours. Many cellular phones are not able to be used at any place or with any carrier you choose. Instead, many cellular phones are locked by the manufacturer, and you can only use certain service providers with that particular phone. That holds true for all phones, unless you have purchased an unlocked cellular phone.

Inside your cellular phone is something called a Subscriber Identity Module, or as it is more commonly known, a SIM card. The SIM card is the key to your cellular phone, and all of your phones identifying characteristics and memory functions are stored there; you might call it the brains and DNA of your phone. The SIM card can be switched from one phone to another, and it allows you to instantly activate your new phone on the network while eliminating the need to reprogram information like your contact list on your new phone.

However, despite all the freedom that the SIM card provides, it is only useful to phones that are programmed to accept certain, preprogrammed SIM cards. Consequently, your phone can only be used in selected places and on selected networks. Only an unlocked cellular phone has the capability to avoid these locks and offer true freedom of service to the owner of the phone.

When most people purchase a cellular phone from a service provider they do not realize that they phone they have purchased is almost always fitted with a network provider lock. That means that no matter how much you like that particular phone, you will not be able to use it with a SIM card from a competing provider network, or even in a country where your provider does not offer service. Further, your phone is probably programmed with features that are inherent to your provider, and therefore even if you were able to switch networks, you wouldn’t be able to enjoy many of the features that the phone had previously.

Therefore, even if your cellular phone provider “unlocks” your handset and allows you to use a new SIM card (which they will reluctantly do if certain criteria are met), many of the features you once enjoyed may no longer work. By purchasing an unlocked cellular phone you can avoid those pitfalls and enjoy flexibility that is otherwise impossible.

When you purchase an unlocked cellular phone you do not go through a typical cellular phone dealer (where the phone and service are purchased together). Instead you purchase the phone without a contract, and as long as that phone is unlocked then you can use it with any SIM Card from your previous phones, regardless of the manufacturer or provider you had previously used. Purchasing an unlocked cellular phone without a contract is usually more expensive than buying a similar locked phone with a contract from a service provider. However, the difference in price can be offset if you are an individual with a need to use different SIM cards on your phone.

For example, many phones are locked so that they will only accept domestic SIM cards, so international travel can leave you without a network. An unlocked cellular phone can use SIM cards from the country you are visiting, and this can save you money because connecting to a foreign network can be considerably less expensive when using a SIM card from that country. Domestic providers often charge exorbitant rates on foreign calls, so travelers who have high call volume when abroad can save hundreds of dollars by using an unlocked cellular phone and a foreign SIM card.

You cannot purchase an unlocked cellular phone from conventional network dealers, but if you shop at electronics stores, or from online vendors, you can find all the most popular cellular phone models that the network providers carry, and more, but without the locking restrictions that the networks imbed in their products. For those who travel and can benefit from access to many networks, an unlocked cellular phone is a very logical choice.

The Cell Phone Mysteries, What are Dual Band, Tri Band and Quad Band Cell Phones and Where Will They Work?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Rose Li asked:

The world of the mobile phone is a confusing one these days, particularly for those wondering how to start a cell phone business. Few things are perhaps as confusing as GSM frequencies and GSM phones that seem to work in some parts of the world but not in others.

Multiple band cell phones and GSM frequencies can be especially confusing for anyone wondering how to start a cell phone business.

So what is the background behind the GSM network?

The GSM network was first suggested by a group of European technicians and policy makers in 1982 and it didn’t take long for consumers and phone makers to adopt the new network after it first emerged in 1991. It wasn’t long before there was growing GSM coverage in an increasing number of countries.

The GSM world grew quickly. There were more than one million subscribers spread over 70 carriers in 30 countries by the end of 1993.

Not only did the new GSM mobile network send and receive all of its information digitally, making it the first 2G mobile phone to be developed it also gave users a great deal of freedom on what they did with it. For the first time they were able to send short written messages to each other for a fraction of the price of a phone call, they could change their carrier and/or go to a different country without getting a new phone.

All they needed to do was to take one GSM SIM card out and replace it with another GSM card and they were in business.

But, as the unknown powers of the world decree, things shouldn’t be that easy and the GSM frequencies set by most of the GSM networks had already been assigned to other purposes by the powers that be.

So, in a situation very similar to TV watchers and people with surveillance systems, a phone that worked in Sussex England wouldn’t pick up anything in San Antonio in the US. Basically it wasn’t a case of one GSM frequency fits all.

As a result, many cell phone makers create cell phones that can work with more than one band with some working with as many as 4 bands.

Still this doesn’t mean there aren’t questions and people are often left asking:

* What is GSM?

* What are the GSM frequencies?

* Why do GSM phones have more than one band?

* Will different frequencies work in different areas?

* How can I check if a phone will work in a particular area?

* How are multiple band phones defined and where will they work?

We’re going to attempt to look at those questions in this article.

What is GSM?

GSM, Global System for Mobile communications (or the Acronym formally known as Groupe Spécial Mobile) is a wireless transmission standard used for mobile phones and, recently wireless modems. GSM and CDMA differ because GSM networks use a SIM card to store all the necessary information to send and receive calls where with CDMA phones everything is kept on the phones.

If you are looking at how to start a cell phone business and you don’t have thousands in working capital GSM mobile phones will probably be a better option than CDMA as they won’t be attached to a particular carrier and don’t require you to be licensed to a particular provider to sell unlocked cell phones.

Another reason to select GSM over CDMA is that it will open up the potential customer base for each phone. As unlocked gsm phones can be used with any GSM networks. To date there is no such thing as an unlocked CDMA phone. When it comes to cell phone plans most providers (especially those in the states) love CDMA phones because it locks their consumers to them.

Why do GSM phones have more than one band?

GSM Phones come with more than one band so that they will work in more than one country as there is more than one GSM frequency and they are not universally transmitted.

As a result, wholesale cellphone manufacturers make GSM and GPRS phones with multiple cell phone bands so that they can work in multiple countries. Most cell phones work on two, three or even four bands. Quad band phones are the most flexible as they can be used all over the world and are often called international phones as a result.

How are multiple band phones defined and where will they work?

Multiple band phones are usually defined by how many GSM frequencies they can operate on and usually come in four different categories, dual band, tri band and quad band. If thinking about how to start a cell phone business it is important to remember the different type of bands as it could mean the difference between your customer getting a high performance phone that they’re happy with and can and them getting a shiny and costly paperweight.

Dual band phone works with two GSM frequencies and, depending on where the phone is made will probably work for the frequencies 900MHz and 1800MHz. These phones are usually less expensive than other types of cell phone and it can be a good way to get a cheap cell phone that will still send SMS MMS and act as a WAP cell phone.

The tri band phone runs on three frequencies and can be used in most countries. This unlocked GSM cell phone is a cheaper option than the quad band phone but safer than a dual band phone.

Quad band phones, or international phones as they are sometimes called, use four bands and can be used anywhere in the world. If you are looking to start a mobile phone business and you wonder what is an unlocked phone guaranteed to sell well and give you the least trouble with customers it will probably be this type of cellphone.

What Are The GSM Frequencies?

Almost all of the world works on the frequencies 850Mhz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900Mhz and in some rare circumstances 400MHz although there are some other frequencies in other locations.

Thankfully too areas where each frequencies work is fairly easy to define in the very general sense (although it always pays to check). So when you’re looking for what areas a cellular phone will work in you should be able to follow a rough guide.

So which areas use GSM 900 and 1800 MHZ signals and which areas use the GSM 850Mhz and 1900MHz frequencies can usually be broken into two groups.

If you are traveling in with your cell phone in Oceania, Africa, Europe, Asia (except for Japan and Korea), the Middle East, Brazil and the Baltic region and looking for roaming networks then mobile network coverage will be either 900MHz, 1800MHz or 900MHz and 1800MHz.

If you are looking for a GSM world phone that will work in the US or South America then you’re better sticking with a wireless cell phone that’ll work on the 850Mhz and 1900MHz bands.

Will different frequencies work in different areas?

With the majority of the GSM world being broken into two main groups (those that take Most of the GSM world is roughly broken up into four main frequencies 900MHz and/or 1800MHz and 850Mhz and/or 1900MHz most unlocked GSM phones will work on one, two or three of the GSM frequencies around the world giving you some level of international roaming on an unlocked phone.

However, you possibly won’t get any joy if for example you take a dual band phone designed for Europe and Asia and then try to use that bluetooth phone in the US.

How can I check if a phone will work in a particular area?

There are two ways to check if a phone will work in a particular area; the first is to get the phone band, which can usually be found on the product description.

If you’re working through how to start a cell phone business and considering phones to stock, it doesn’t matter if you’re thinking about a multimedia mobile, WAP phone or GSM watch phone, the process should be the same. If you are sourcing cell phones from a wholesale supplier or wholesale dropship vendor put the ball into their court. They should have that information on their website or product advertising material for the unlocked cell phone.

Once you’ve got the GSM frequency the GSM phone worked on you can make sure it will work in your area.

If you are looking for a cellphone for yourself this could be as easy as calling your local service provider, or looking it up on sites like GSMworld dot com or worldtimezones dot com.

If you are wondering how to start a cell phone business then your best course of action is to list the frequencies on the description for the GSM cell phone, along with the phone’s other features (like if it is a music phone or it has a good cell phone camera) and tell the person who wants to buy unlocked cell phones from you which parts of the world it will probably work in.

So it looks like cell phone bands and GSM frequencies aren’t that scary after. It’s just a case of knowing where to look and ensuring you’ve got the right phone for the right location.

Being faced with a quantity of buying choices, what will you consider about before buying a cell phone?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Evangeline asked:

Generally, when it comes to choose new cell phones and wholesale cell phones, people can make absolutely different tendencies. Many consumers put the brands of cell phones as the utmost concern, while some others pay more attention to how many functions the cell phone has.

Before cell phone buying, buyers should learn about some knowledges of a kind of cell phones they have in mind. But it is quite likely that many people purchased cell phones that might not be suitable for them by just following what others did.

Today, an increasing number of new functions are added into cell phones. They are usually made as the leading promotional points by the cell phone companies. Yet, it is important to ask ask a question: are all those functions useful to you?

You would think that a camera can bring more fun to your using experience. But when you look to the cases of some feature-rich cell phone owners, not a few of them grow tired of the feature after a transitory period of freshness feeling. And since camera is not the most important function of the cell phone, it lag  far behind the professional cameras. It’s obviously a better choice for those who take great interest in photographing to add the money saved from cell phone to a professional camera.

The same logic is adequate for MP3, Bluetooth functions as well.

For some people who just want to use the cell phone for telephoning, it is better to consider carefully before purchasing, because the more functions the phone has, the higher price it has. Don’t be fooled by the cell phones which have all features that cell phones can have, and are charged at inconceivably low prices. This might mean that the quality of the cell phone might be unreliable.

If you just want to use the calling function with cell phone, you should investigate the battery life and the warranty. It is really troublesome to charge the cell phone almost everyday. Buy cell phones that have good performance of battery. Usually, batteries are also the bottleneck in the enhancement of cell phones. Cell phones with many functions consume electricity much faster than those with fewer features.

Another factor to consider about when buying a cell phone is the brand. Big brands usually tend to have better quality and durability, but with higher prices. If your budget is limited, it’s helpful to make clear which functions can be frequently used.  Some less famous brands are usually more affordable. With less money, you can buy a rich-feature cell phone. But if you just want to buy the cell phone for making calls for as long as much possible a span, then big brands are more ideal.

Mobile Phone Upgrades - are you Getting the Best Deal?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009
Duncan Elliott asked:

Free Mobile Phones - Upgrades

Mobile phone upgrades are easy to do - if you know where and how to do it.

A “mobile phone upgrade” is where an existing customer of a network (eg T-Mobile, Vodafone, Orange, O2, 3G, Virgin etc), who has been with that network for about 1 year since getting their last mobile phone, gets a new mobile phone from the network at a free, or cheap discount price, in return for agreeing to stay with that network for another 12 months, under a 12 month contract agreement. The customer keeps their existing mobile phone number, and stays with the same network. This is called a “mobile phone upgrade” - often it is a free mobile phone upgrade!

To get the best offer for a free or cheap mobile phone upgrade you must understand this. The mobile phone networks pay a mobile phone dealer more for a new customer (new mobile phone contract) than they do for a mobile phone upgrade customer. This odd situation has been the same for many years. The only network that seems to pay mobile phone dealers nearly as much for an upgrade customer as for a new free mobile phone customer is Three (also known as 3 or 3G). The other mobile hone networks simply do not seem to value their existing customers as much!

The craziness of this situation is that it encourages you to be disloyal to your current network.

What does this means to you? How can you get the best deal from knowing all this, so you can get a free mobile phone upgrade AND get other benefits? Read on …

The amount that a mobile phone dealer can give to you will depend on how much money he is making. If he is making more money from a ‘new’ mobile phone contract customer than for an upgrade customer, then he will be able to give the ‘new’ mobile phone contract customer a bigger discount or a free mobile phone or maybe more!

Now, did you know that instead of upgrading your phone on the same network (where you probably will not get such a good deal or a free mobile phone etc), you can switch to a NEW and different network AND keep your existing mobile phone number? This is true.

Now, knowing that you can keep your mobile phone number, and that you can usually get a better deal as a ‘new’ customer on another network, what are you going to do?

You can simply become a ‘new’ customer on a different network … this new network then treat you as a new customer, give you all the free mobile phone bonuses and gifts etc, AND you keep your mobile phone number!

So by simply looking around at all the offers available to you on all the other networks

The next article will tell you how you can get an even better deal …

—————————————————————————————-

Free Mobile Phones - How to get an even better Upgrade

Before you take the jump and switch to a different network for your free mobile phone upgrade, think about this …

Imagine you call your current network to tell them that you are thinking of leaving them to switch to another mobile network. Often that person you speak to will be on a commission to keep your business ie they will earn a bit of money if they can convince you to stay with that mobile phone network.

This means that you can use this to your advantage.

Tell them that you have had a great offer from another network (and do not lie - they will most likely know exactly what you could and could not get with another network). Simply ask them if they can equal or better the deal offered by this other network.

If they can equal it, then it is probably not worth the hassle of switching mobile phone networks and the paperwork. It is not too much hassle to do the switch but obviously it is easier to stay with your current mobile phone network.

Free mobile phone upgrades can be got in this way quite easily by simply understanding how the system works and how the money works in mobile phones and free mobile phone upgrades.

So next time, simply ask you current mobile phone network if they will better the free mobile phone offer from another network. Always ask if they can better the offer - don’t ask them to equal it or they will only equal it.

Good luck.

There are more tips than this at free-mobile–phones.blogspot.com/ - other tips on how to get the best free mobile phone upgrade.

Free Mobile Phone Upgrades - WHERE to get them?

Free mobile phone upgrades can be SO easy to get, and get with fantastic bonus gift offers, when you do it right.

But WHERE do you go to get the best deal?

If you are going to stay with your current network because you KNOW that they are giving you the best offer, then the ‘where’ question is easily answered.

But first you need to make sure there is not a better deal available from other networks and other mobile phone dealers - don’t forget - one dealer might give you a better offer than another dealer for the same network - simply because that dealer wants your business more and is prepared to give away more of his commission to you as a bonus gift to get you to sign the mobile phone contract deal.

It is important that you get the right offer for YOU. A camera phone may be the best thing for one person, but totally unnecessary for another. 1000 free minutes may be great for one person, but totally over the top for another.

So first you must check what you want and need, for both the phone and the price plan (also known as mobile phone tariff).

A good site to start with that offers top offers on all the different mobile phone networks and allows you to choose phones and price plans based on different criteria, is

http://www.mobile-phone-upgrade.com

The list of the top 5 sites to start with are

1. Carphonewarehous.com

2. www.mobile-phone-upgrade.com

3. thelink.com

4. /www.2u.co.uk

5. Phones4u.com

Use these sites to get a list of the best offers for the phone you want with the price plan you want.

Then rewrite this list with the best offer for your free mobile phone at the top, and the rest in rank order.

Now simply call your network and see if they will better the offer at the top of your list of free mobile phone upgrade offers!

Which Phones Will Work On Bell Mobility? The Top 4 Ways To Identify a Bell Cell Phone

Saturday, November 28th, 2009
A Thompson asked:

Are you curious if a certain phone will work on Bell Mobility?  In this short article, you will learn why it is important to know if a phone will work on Bell before you purchase it.  You will also learn how to identify a Bell phone.

Unlike other Canadian cellular carriers like Rogers and Fido, Bell Mobility will not allow any phone to be activated on their network.  Bell Mobility only activates phones that are originally purchased by Bell from the manufacturer.  How does Bell accomplish this?  I’m glad you asked… Every CDMA cell phone comes with an ESN (electronic serial number), this number uniquely identifies every phone produced by the manufacturer.  When Bell purchases new phones they store each individual ESN to a database called the ESN Database, and whenever someone takes a phone to Bell to be activated, Bell checks their ESN Database to make sure the ESN is in there.  If your phone’s ESN does not have a matching ESN in Bell’s database, your phone will not be activated.

Cell phone manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola and others rarely make a cell phone model for a specific mobile carrier, so the same phone model can be found on many different mobile carriers.  Often Bell will sell the same phone models as Sprint and Verizon in the US.  But even identical cell phone models sold by Sprint and Verizon will cannot be activated by Bell.   When looking for replacement Bell Mobility cell phone (new, used, or refurbished) it is important to know that the phone you are considering is indeed a Bell phone.

Here are the top 4 ways to identify a Bell cellular phone:

Bell spends money to brand their phones.  Most phones will have a Bell logo stamped somewhere on the phone’s housing.  If you find the Bell logo on a cellular phone, there is a very good chance that the phone is a Bell phone. The second way to identify a Bell Mobility cell phone is in the start-up software.  Just like when you turn on your PC, you will see the Microsoft logo on your monitor during the computer start-up most Bell phones will display the Bell logo during the phone’s start-up. Another way to know if your phone is a Bell phone is to see if the phone you are interested in is on the list of phones that Bell has released.  This is an effective way to eliminate phones that cannot be activated on Bell Mobility because if a certain model was not released by Bell, then there is almost no way that the phone is from Bell.  For example, up until the date this article was written Bell has never released a phone by manufacturer Sony-Ericsson, so any Sony-Ericsson phone is definitely not a Bell unit.  This list is extensive and is accurate through the time this article is written. The most effective way to determine if the phone you are considering is a Bell phone and can be activated on the Bell network is to locate the ESN, or ask the seller for the electronic serial number on the phone.  Then contact your local Bell store (or Bell Mobility Customer Service), give the representative the ESN, and they can let you know if the phone can be activated.

Follow these simple instructions and you can be sure that the cellular phone you are considering is actually a Bell cellular phone and can be activated by Bell Mobility.

After hearing about the Sony Ericsson Satio Mobile Phone’s 12MP camera it immediately occurred to me that with this high resolution camera, there must come a requirement for an extremely large amount of memory. That’s fine because bundled in the box with the Sony Ericsson Satio is an 8GB memory card.

So what else is in the box? Sony Ericsson Satio Battery Battery Charger 8GB Memory card USB cable Media manager Colour-matched stereo portable hands free User guide Here’s the Sony Ericsson Satio Technical Data:
